Oh woe! The ship builder does not want the captain to oversee the new building because he causes delays. He fusses about items that are important to him. As the captain represents the boss who is his employer, items important to the owner shall be done and those needs and nice to haves of the captain may even happen.
Some person’s point of view will be attended to.
The owner sees his pride and joy, that beautiful boat and that is why he pays so much money. So the boat that takes him cruising must remain the fruits of his hard labor and not just be that sleek piece of craftsmanship that he has launched.
His point of view must not tarnish with time. The cruising speed he was promised must not fall short of expectations. Perhaps three black-outs in a seven day trip and numerous equipment failure events dampen his spirit and his new found love even has a grey or black water smell.
The builder will always remind the owner that it was the owner himself who said, “never mind, just launch it by Friday.”
Through whose eyes should the owner be looking? Is the engineer too “nuts and bolts” or not allowed to express his opinion directly to the owner and so his recommendations are not considered.
Imagine this new super yacht first night out with the boss on board scenario:
Classification society specifications were easily met and the certificates and ISM manuals are all on board neatly placed in the wheel house office in smart custom designed shelves. Safety has been well attended to according to the “code”.
Oh woe! The engineer has to find a vital spare part for the generator lift pump in the bilge under the owners’ bed at two a.m. The electrical drawings and manuals that he needs are kept under his bunk in the cabin that he shares with the cook and annoying the cook at two a.m. may result in smaller portions.
“Must change that pressure switch now!” he mutters to himself, as the generator tone changes and the lights go out. “The other generator should start up! And where are the emergency lights?” he cries.
Of course, it is done differently in the merchant navy where there is a grumpy old grey headed man with a white boiler suite and a clip board who has a place at the other head of the table during the morning yard meetings. His years of experience in trivial matters such as making access available to get to machinery for maintenance and providing a spare-gear locker and allowing time for supervising machinery trials with his signature on each item of equipment signed off as meeting the specification, is highly respected.
It may be said that you do not have to be a soldier to lead an army to victory but it could help if you know how to load a canon.
(Meme says, this could be true of any small yacht being built too. Good engineering design is essential if you want a safe and pleasant boat).
